Seniority is a valuable thing, but it can at times get in the way of innovation and change. Organisations with many older employees can find opportunities in connecting 'experience' and 'engagement'. This understanding produced a lot of energy at SKBO Bergen.
"When you're in education, you face challenging changes every year. SKBO Bergen is a group of primary schools with major ambitions. Our teams include many older employees, so we were looking for certainty regarding the willingness to change and internal mobility. Together with 365, we looked into the factors that can have a positive influence on engagement in relation to stage of life. We quickly gained support for our plans. We therefore feel confident in anticipation of the performance measurements."
comments Arno Broekman, SKBO Bergen Supraschool Director
SKBO asked 365 for input on the development of a stage of life policy. As an ageing workforce was an important theme for the educational group, engagement merited extra attention. People who have been in education for 20, 30 or even 40 years can have a hard time finding the motivation for yet another new approach or method. A focus on engagement can uncover the energy needed to bring about educational changes. All teachers were invited to participate in a survey, which showed that 39% ran risks of stress or burnout, while 24% was engaged. Several workshops were organised to work on strengthening and finding sources of energy. The objective was to boost engagement in order to improve enduring employability.
