Tackling the burnout problem while you're in the middle of a reorganisation? It's possible: KPN has proven this. The core of its approach: focus on engagement.
"A reorganisation led to increasing performance pressure among KPN managers. That served as the impetus to join forces with 365 to improve the mental and physical resilience of our managers. To great effect. Even though the workload was considerable and the ambitions were very great, we detected a notable decrease of the number of burnouts. Focusing on engagement proved the key to achieving our targets,"
says J.M. Knaapen, KNP Human Resources Director
KPN and 365 faced an extraordinary challenge. Naturally, reorganisations create a lot of pressure on management. However, workload does not become work stress as long as people have enough energy and feel dedicated to their job. In short: when they are engaged. This is why we chose to focus on engagement. We used the EngagementScan to analyse the engagement and burnout risk of the employees. Several interventions followed at the individual level, such as psychological coaching, training and stress management. The organisation introduced management meetings and vitality weeks. The result within a single year was: considerably more engaged and much reduced burnout.
